Keeping Your Room Safe With Children
By Justin Jimmerson
I've always been an advocate for safety in whatever I do. And at home is no different. By nature, accidents can and will happen. When it comes to children, it seems the chances of an accident increase 100 fold. So let's look at some tips to help prevent accidents at home.
1. Children love to climb on things so it's important that you have things anchored down really well. Book shelves and night stands are the most common thing for tipping over. If possible, you should secure the book shelf to the wall and use a lower and heavier night stand in the bedroom. If you have put things together yourself, such as a bed, make sure that it is really sturdy. Children are notorious for jumping on beds and they will do it.
2. Any type of wiring such as computer cables, power cables, and phone cords should be hidden underneath carpets or tacked along base boards. Getting up in the middle of the night can substantially increase your chances of having an accident since you aren't all together.
3. You may love your hardwood or tiled floors but these are dangers for children. They are extremely slippery when wearing socks or anything has spilt on them. You should buy some cheap area rugs or carpet to cover the main walking areas.
4. Install electrical socket covers, put locks on cabinet and certain doors, gates at stairwells, and of course keep all medications locked away.
These are only a few suggestions you can do to keep your house safe for children. Always be on the looked out hazards you might have over looked.
