Empowering and Connecting Orange County and Los Angeles Moms and Families

For twelve years you've lived with the delightful creature you brought into the world. Somewhere around that thirteenth birthday the lovely child disappeared and was replaced with a life-form of unknown origin, better known as a teenager.

Been a teenager can be tough and it can be as equally challenging for the parent.

Here are Five simple tips for parenting teens which may help you navigate the challenging water of adolescence:

ACCEPT THE FACT THAT YOU KNOW NOTHING

For the next six to eight years you will be viewed as clueless and out of touch. That's fine. Accept it for what it is but, never let your guard down or lower your expectations. While your teen may not appreciate it at this point in their life they may very well thank you for it later.

TEACH BY EXAMPLE

Be the kind of adult you want your teenager to become. Be responsible, financially and emotionally stable and lead a clean life. Whether you know it or not, they are watching.

At this point in their life they are very much influenced by what they see and if what you say does not match you will have a problem getting them to follow through on what they say.

LISTEN

They still have something to say even if you are having a hard time understanding them. The art of listening is fundamental in any relationship.

SHARE

Include them in your life and activities as much as they will allow it. You are building for the future. Be their friend who has their best interests at heart.

LAUGH

This time of life is more enjoyable than you know. It may not seem like it at times but there is lots of fun to be had. So enjoy it as mush as possible.

Good points. Remember to respect your teen. Treat him with the same respect you give to your husband or friends. This can be difficult sometimes, but the relationship needs to grow into the next stage. As parents know, through all this hard work their loving child will eventually return!
